240,000 minutes, that is 4,000 hours watch time. I’m guessing you are here because you are looking at how many minutes of watch time you need to be able to turn monetization on for your channel. Myself, as a small Youtuber who joined this platform maybe five or six months ago, I’m going to break down my thoughts on YouTube recent monetization change on their policy. The reason I’m talking about it now is because we are coming up to the date of when they are actually going to effect which is February. We’re coming up to about that time now. My thoughts and opinion on this are coming up right after this.

Hey everyone. Darren Taylor here of thebigmarketer.co.uk giving you tips, insights and opinions on all things marketing. Today, we are talking about something different. Today we are talking about demonetization of YouTube channels who are small. Small YouTube creators who have less than a thousand subscribers and way, way, way less than the 240,000 minutes worth of watch time or 4,000 hours worth of watch time that you need to be able to turn your monetization on.
As a small YouTuber myself, what do I think about these changes? I don’t really care. Now, I know that might be unpopular. A lot of small YouTubers are going crazy. I’ve seen Twitter. I see videos coming up all the time of people who are pretty pissed off with YouTube about this change. In my opinion, I don’t care because it doesn’t really affect me. I previously got to the monetization threshold before the rules changed and I didn’t even turn it on.
I didn’t Have Monetization Enabled Anyway!
Now, the reason I didn’t turn it on is because I want people to watch my content, to try and grow my channel without any barriers in the way. Barriers include advertisements. People can sometimes get off an advertisement or choose a different video on the recommended if they’re taking a chance on a small YouTuber. For me, I didn’t want to turn that on because I want people to try and watch my content with no barriers.
The other reason is as well that for this YouTube channel, I’m not doing it to try and make money from YouTube. Money from YouTube sucks. I’ve got websites online right now, blogs and other kind of niche websites that have AdSense enabled with banner ads across them, and I can tell you firsthand right now, with the volume of traffic those websites are getting, the revenue from AdWords sucks.
The other thing as well is that YouTube have said that most people affected by this change have yet to even make their first paycheck. In essence, really, you’re not angry about losing money per se, you’re angry at the prospect of being able to make money, which is very different. The money we are talking about here is very small figures. If you head over to Socialblade, check out their ad revenue reporting tools, some say it’s quite accurate, some say it’s not the best, but it’s the best reporting tool there is right now. Check out how much money a small YouTuber would make with this tool and you’ll be surprised at what a pittance is. Now, some people might say some money is better than no money or whatever it might be, but at the same time, it doesn’t really matter. You are not making a great amount of money.
I See Why YouTube Made The Change
I understand why YouTube made this change. They have to make sure that the people that are advertising on their platform have content that’s suitable. By hitting those thresholds, YouTube would have hoped that they would have found anyone who doesn’t fit that description, who is unscrupulous and making bad content, and people who do have a good channel, who are growing organically and getting loads of watch time are good videos and they’re good places for their advertisers to show up. Which makes sense to me in terms of the products and longevity of YouTube as an advertising platform.
Now, personally, I think this is a good thing because it means that YouTube, as a network, as a social media network itself is ensuring the quality of its content and any impostors, any fakers, any spammers will be eliminated from making money and they’ll be less encouraged to do so which means the platform is more free for creators who want to add value like myself and the millions of others out there who want to do the same. Telling their stories themselves as well. I think it’s a good change. I don’t care about the money, and you shouldn’t too, just focus on growing your channel because that’s exactly what I’m going to be doing.
